Previously, Alcaraz Catering had 2 different logo/identities floating around their organization. One resembled your stereotypical "baker" (wearing a classic white chef's hat), one-dimensional, holding a tray of different kinds of bread... The second, was of a waiter (not too different from the one pictured above), with the company name below it. The client chose for us to explore the latter of the two.

Other important elements to infuse into this project was their motto: "When you want the very best!", and "Est. 1982." The identity they found fit best for their needs almost has a "emblematic"/"official seal" look to it.

The Alcaraz Catering "official seal of approval" has REPUBLIC's "official seal of approval."

Chacmool Studio

Jose Alvizar, Principal tattoo artist and owner of Chacmool Studio, commissioned REPUBLIC Design Company for the design, implementation, and production of his latest round of marketing collateral pieces.

The focus of this campaign was to highlight the Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican stone statue, (after which Jose's studio is named after), otherwise referred to as "Chacmool". The Chacmool depicts a human figure in a position of reclining with the head up and turned to one side, holding a tray over the stomach. Long-story-short, legend has it that the Chacmool was a depiction of a former ruler of Chichen Itza. The tray the Chacmool holds over his stomach was used to hold the beating hearts of human's for sacrificial ritualistic ceremonies.

Gruesomely awesome, right?!

The Chacmool (shown below) is actually hand drawn in CHARCOAL by Jose himself. It's an original piece from his private sketch-pad. From here, we scanned the image in and custom-tailored the environment to fit with his desired aesthetic. Included is all pertinent information he requested, along with appropriate contact information.

SOW CAL HYDRO: "Illuminated Outdoor Sign"

The principals of Sow Cal Hydro recently came into possession of an "illuminated outdoor sign" (not sure how) and asked REPUBLIC Design Company to create mock-up proofs of their Sow Cal Hydro store-front sign.

(Funny Story)...

Our clients asked us to use their logo, colors: red, green, and yellow, and the word "HYDRO" in really big letters. Our objective at "RDC" (Republic Design Company) is never to meet but always "over-achieve" our clients expectations.

As such, we sent them the top proof (white background with tiled Sow Cal Hydro logo @ 45º angle) to them 1st. While they were supremely impressed, they weren't looking for anything that "extravagant". Rather, they were "head-over-heels" when they received the 2nd round proof with a series of color options.

We strategically placed and sized the Sow (Tree) Cal logo to "flow" with the "Y" in "HYDRO", along with the "L" (in Cal) and R (in Hydro) to line up together on their left hand side perfectly...

-Had the opportunity to swing by California Body Shop in Oxnard, CA., to say hello to our client and good friend Aldo Vasquez. The body shop is "kinda" on my way to work ("kinda", 'cause it's 1 block out of my way [-no worries]), and to my surprise; Aldo finally (-kidding, Aldo) put up his 16" x 96" main outdoor coroplast sign...

Tucked away in the back of the Shop was Aldo's "pride-&-joy". A 1960, GMC Suburban "Carryall", complete with its killer Chameleon paint-job! When we created the back-side of his business card, we were provided with a high resolution image, and had never had the opportunity to see the actual vehicle... Until today!

It's a "beaut"! One instinctively is inclined to see the vehicle from all different angles.

A Little Piece of Heaven originally began as a home business creating cookies and cakes. Due to popular demand and an obvious talent for baked goods, A Little Piece of Heaven has since evolved into a full service Bakery specializing in "Sweet Delights" for all occasions...

Crucial to the success of their logo/identity was the incorporation of "Heavenly-esque" elements like the clouds. Additionally, the colors are central to the overall theme present in their store-front. Lastly, we couldn't forget the inclusion of the owners favorite: "the butterfly"! Placed on either side for balance and symmetry, the butterfly rounds-out the design rather nicely.

TEAM FOX: "Put the Fire Out for Parkinsons"

Jan & Harold Bogner commissioned REPUBLIC Design Company for the design and implementation of the 2009, TEAM FOX, "Put the Fire Out for Parkinsons" Poster and T-Shirt.

Named for the actor who is battling Parkinson's, the nonprofit foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for the disorder of unknown cause that affects nearly 5 million people worldwide.

The reason it was named, "Put the Fire Out for Parkinsons" is in honor of Jerry Carpenter, (Jan Bogner's brother). Jerry is a retired captain with California Department of Forestry, now called Cal Fire.

The region includes cities of Agoura Hills, Camarillo, Calabasas, Fillmore, Moorpark, Port Hueneme, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, Ventura, Westlake Village, and County unincorporated areas.

Channel Islands High School commissioned REPUBLIC Design Company for the design, implementation, and production of their 2009, Homecoming Tickets!

"Alice in Wonderland" was this years theme and we were asked to design accordingly. With significant font modifications, and inspirational elements from the actual movie, we were able to capture the essence of "Alice" while remaining mutually exclusive from the original. Additionally, the client asked the tickets be sequentially numbered (from 1 to 600) for tracking purposes, along with a tear-away stub for added security.

As alumni from C.I.H.S., we are well aware the production for their homecoming will be nothing short of awesome! Now, they have amazing tickets to match!

Our clients objective was to create awareness throughout the student body through innovative design. We chose to (literally) integrate "The Oracle" logo, V.P.H.S.'s Mascot (Spartan), and the new iPod Nano all-in-one to really drive home the message of the ad. Complimented with clean iPod-inspired design, and font-type; we look forward to hearing about this ad's appeal later this November.

(Created scenario in another industry where SPEC work does NOT exist):

"I went for a dental check-up yesterday. After the dentist inspected my teeth, she suggested some work to prevent further tooth decay. I told her to go ahead, and if the dental work was satisfactory, I'd be more than happy to pay. She responded that she wouldn't be able to do that, because she normally provides a service when a fee is agreed upon up-front. I said I'd let her know after I checked in with other local dentists."

This scenario happens in the design industry every day and is seen as very unethical as it is ruining the design industry. A designer should not have to invest time and resources with no guarantee of payment much like a dentist or any other professional...

The difference?

Professional Logo designers have an actual design process that involves research, sketching, conceptualizing, and reflection and this is why they do not charge $5.00

The Design Process of a professional logo designer usually consists of:

1. The Design Brief: They conduct a questionnaire or interiew with the client to get the design brief.

2. Research: They conduct research focused on the industry itself, on it's history, and on it's competitors.

3. Reference: They conduct research into logo designs that have been successful and current styles and trends that are related to the design brief.

4. Sketching & Conceptualizing: They develop the logo design concept(s) around the brief and research. They use creativity and know how to design a logo.

5. Reflection: They take breaks throughout their design process. This lets their ideas mature and lets them get renewed enthusiasm and receive feedback.

6. Presentation: They then choose whether to present only a select few logos to the client or a whole collection.

7. Celebration: They then drink beer or eat chocolate or sleep or start on next logo design. Or a combination here-in.

Camacho & Viajes...

Camacho & Associates, and Viajes Maryvel commissioned REPUBLIC Design Company for the design and implementation of their stationary items.

The globe inside the Camacho & Associates logo was strategically enlarged, then repeated on the opposite side of each item (as pictured above). The airplane in the Viajes Maryvel logo was amplified with a longer "flight trail" that, given the space alloted, seems to occupy rather nicely.

You may notice the similarity in the "globe" within the Viajes Maryvel and Camacho & Associates logo's. This in-part is due to the specific markets the two companies serve (travel & title) and because they are "sister" companies serving greater Ventura County.

Henry Salas of "True Light Insurance" commissioned REPUBLIC Design Company for the design and creation of his Agency's identity.

As the image above denotes, True Light Insurance's core competencies lie within the realm of Health, Life, and Workers Compensation. It was important to our client to state these clearly in the companies identity, along with minimally stylized type-font (for the name of the company), in conjunction with the "candle" and "candle-dish" design.

For the backside of the business card, we created a watermark with the candle, commencing the branding process.

Frank Arrieta of "Art Flores Bail Bonds", (The "Bondsman of the 805"), commissioned REPUBLIC Design Company for the re-design of his personal business card.

As an independent contractor working under the direct tutelage of Art Flores; Frank Arrieta wanted his name (and his business card, in-general) to be more prominent with an overall, "cleaner", more professional presentation.

The front of the business card contains a UV coat. Strategically, the back of the business card is "matte", for writing important information in pen or pencil.

The color selection was strategically selected to evoke a construction-oriented theme; along with 3-dimensional shapes mildly resembling the scaffold of a freshly erected high-rise...

(-On a related tangent), the following was a computer generated logo/identity version rejected by the client:

If you look closely at this design, you can see a capital "R", a lowercase "d" and "m" all connected in such a way that, as a whole, vaguely exhibit the shape of a "heart"...

"General Contractors with heart..." Although our clients are passionate in their endeavors as general contractors, -were less than thrilled about this particular pitch...

Exemplifying his uncompromising craftsmanship in this uniquely, chameleon painted, 61' Chevy Suburban, (pictured on the back-side of his business card), our client was still in-need of a more-readily identifiable logo. Playing off of the classic California license plate brand-equity, we devised this "mock-license plate" identity.

With business cards, coroplast outdoor signs, and outdoor vinyl-cut stickers, California Body Shop is "ready for business"!

There are a lot of social media experts out there, and I’m not one of them. I don’t think your business needs a Facebook Page (actually, I say that they’re largely bunk); meanwhile, I feel that a lot of “blogger outreach” is an outright waste of time. In fact, I argue that you should probably ignore a lot of tools and features out there.

I often lament the hubbub around social media. It’s not that I question its necessity or importance; rather, I dislike how it’s upheld as the answer to all our problems. Nevertheless, our firm has experimented with social media a fair amount and as a result, we’ve gained some insights on the topic. As a result, I’m often asked to speak about social media. The following post is a summary of my talk at SEGD ’09 in San Diego last week.

If you haven’t already, you’re likely going to use social media in one form or another to promote your business. The following are a few easy things to keep in mind as you do so:
