Harlan West (above) of westdesign.com
winner of 26th Annual poster design

Patrick Mullen (above),
New Director of California Strawberry Festival

R E P U B L I C was invited to the 26th Annual California Strawberry Festival "Official Poster Unveiling Kick-Off". Harlan West was on hand to unveil his winning poster design.

The much anticipated unveiling of the 2009 official poster was at an invitation-only garden luncheon hosted by Yolanda's Mexican Cafe in Oxnard, CA.

Harlan said his wife was reading the newspaper one day a few months back and saw this contest opportunity to design  what is now the official poster. Lucky for Harlan, his wife pointed out this awesome opportunity.

LUCKY!!!

We're still grateful for the invite and look forward to working on other design aspects for the Strawberry Festival this year!

"A SUITE FOR MA DUKES..."

James Yancey (1974-2006), better known as J Dilla was born in Detroit. His work as a producer had a defining role in Hip-Hop. He produced hits for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Common and Erykah Badu to name a few. At 32, he passed away in Los Angeles in the care of his mother, Ma Dukes of Lupus related illness.

Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson payed tribute to Dilla by interpreting his music WITH A 40-PIECE orchestra, Their EP, "Suite for Ma Dukes" was released and performed LIVE for the first time.

An unforgettable performance...

Hooker Dream Escape...

On Saturday, February 21st, I also had the opportunity to swing by the Natalia Fabia "Hooker Dream Escape" at the Corey Helford Gallery ( visit: www.coreyhelfordgallery.com for complete profile). Strange, but awesome, all rolled up into one.

Special Thanks to Edward Avendano a.k.a., "Dj Maddx" for soliciting our services for the design of his I D E N T I T Y. He was looking for something modern, hip, clean, and above all else, a "symbol" that will identify him on future marketing collateral.

Cool, huh!

Advertising in a Bad Economy...

Sounds Risky doesn't it? But in fact, advertising in a bad economy makes good business sense! American Business press analyzed 143 companies during the 1974/75 downturn in our economy and found that companies that advertised during the recession had the highest growth in sales and net income during the two years and the two years following the recession. They also proved that companies that cut advertising had the lowest sales and net income increases during the same study peri0ds.

McGraw-Hill also found similar results when they studied companies' advertising during the 1981/82 recession. They found that companies that cut advertising increased their sales (by only) 19% following the recession while companies that continued to advertise during the recession experienced 275% increase in their sales!!!

Companies that advertise during a down economy must adapt their advertising to fit the message that the buying public wants to hear. Auto manufacturers are now stressing fuel economy instead of performance or the size of their vehicles. Restaurants are now stressing their low cost menu items and take-out options to help consumers keep watch on their monthly food expenditures.

An advertising message must concentrate on the company's core values and benefits. Companies must focus on their benefits that they deliver to the consumer and REWORK THIER BRANDING MESSAGE TO DELIVER A NEED AND NOT A WANT. Home improvement companies must focus on how their products will save money in the long run for the buyers, and how their products will add value to a house when the economy begins to come back.

The average recession over the past 100 years has lasted around 11 months. Keep your message strong and consistent, and focus on your core values, and customers will see your business as someone who has weathered the storm. They'll be confident in doing business with your company when they become ready to buy...

GO BRONCOS!

Dr. Lopez, former Mayor of Oxnard/well respected pillar of our community, approached us to make him some business cards/remittance cards for his Optometry practice. He asked we update the look of these important pieces and incorporate his "Denver Bronco's" team colors...

The result?

A heaping slice of fried gold!
