More mess; less B.S. (or: Nine simple suggestions for using social media)

Monday, June 1st, 2009

There are a lot of social media experts out there, and I’m not one of them. I don’t think your business needs a Facebook Page (actually, I say that they’re largely bunk); meanwhile, I feel that a lot of “blogger outreach” is an outright waste of time. In fact, I argue that you should probably ignore a lot of tools and features out there.

I often lament the hubbub around social media. It’s not that I question its necessity or importance; rather, I dislike how it’s upheld as the answer to all our problems. Nevertheless, our firm has experimented with social media a fair amount and as a result, we’ve gained some insights on the topic. As a result, I’m often asked to speak about social media. The following post is a summary of my talk at SEGD ’09 in San Diego last week.

If you haven’t already, you’re likely going to use social media in one form or another to promote your business. The following are a few easy things to keep in mind as you do so:

Five Rules for Effective Branding

The following article list the five "golden" rules for effective Branding:

Five Rules for Effective Branding

July 7, 2007 by Susan Gunelius

Brand Strategy

There is more to creating and promoting a brand than making a pretty logo and tagline.  In fact, a logo and tagline are just representations of your brand.  Following are several rules to follow to help you create, promote and maintain your brand.

5 Rules for Effective Branding

Be specific: Know what your brand stands for, and know what your brand promises.  Your brand promises should be precise and attainable, and you should be able to communicate them clearly.  For example, don’t just say your brand stands for quality.  That’s a broad statement that any company can make.  How does your brand specifically live and breathe quality?  Those specifics are what will make your brand stand out from your competition.

Be authoritative: Once you know what your brand stands for and promises, don’t be afraid to flaunt it.  You need to make everyone else believe you’re the leader and authority in your area of expertise and specialization.  Don’t meekly communicate your message.  Say it with powerful words and conviction.  In short, you have to make everyone else believe it, too.

Be consistent: Get your brand message out there and don’t waiver on it.  I’ve read statistics in the past that state as soon as you’re tired of your message, your customers are just starting to recognize it.  A consistent message and customer experience are critical elements to building your brand.

Be honest: In today’s world, people welcome honesty and your business will be rewarded for it.  Don’t offer promotions or guarantees you can’t deliver.  Instead, admit your fallibility and deliver on your promises.  Integrity goes a long way.

Be relentless: Get your brand message out there.  Then get it out again and again and again.  People are inundated with a myriad of messages each day.  It’s not only critical that you try to stand out from the competition but it’s equally important that you are not forgotten.  Don’t drop the ball on communicating your brand promise and building your brand image.  Your efforts will be rewarded in time.

These rules apply to company, product and personal branding.  They are simple, basic rules that are critical to your brand’s overall success.  What rule or rules would you add to this list?

Camacho & Associates, Corporation

New Logo/Identity:
Old Logo/Identity

Camacho & Associates commissioned REPUBLIC to design a new Logo/Identity for the Title Company.

Key objectives of the newly revamped logo was to make it "friendlier" in appearance and it have more branding power via innovative design.

If you look closely, the globe inside of the "a" in "associates", is the same style & design as the globe above the "i" inside the "Viajes Maryvel" logo/identity (see Monday, June 8th entry). This was strategically created as the two companies are interrelated, and as a part of our strategy to utilize both companies logo/identity equities collectively. Consistency is a key element to effective branding & Logo recognition. As such, the shared association of the "globe" only serves to garner crossover appeal (& profits).

New SCES "General-Use" Folder Inside:
Old SCES "Homework" Folder Outside:

REPUBLIC is proud to be working with Santa Clara Elementary School (SCES) in the complete remodel of the school's identity.

1st in a series of design and print projects are these Presentation Folders. Central to the overriding theme of these folders, (and all future SCES design projects), are the SCES letters, as well as what the school refers to as: "Little Joey" (character with little wings & halo).

The school caters to 1st-6th graders and is one of the oldest/most prestigious catholic elementary schools in the County. Although there is a great wealth of history behind SCES, the principals wanted to make sure that the design of these pieces have appeal to their core demographic: the students!

Viajes Maryvel

"Sharpened up"
Old Viajes Maryvel Logo:

Working with the principals of Viajes Maryvel, REPUBLIC was called upon to Re-design and update the "Viajes Maryvel" logo/identity.

Our clients explained it was important to maintain the same style fonts as the previous design, but improve upon the "globe" and create "movement" with the airplane and it's flight-path.

Feel free to click on the images above and see the difference between the two logo's. Note on new design, the globe has a 3 dimension,"spherical" look/feel.

Amadeus LST: Limosene + Shuttle + Taxi

Amadeus LST Business Card (front):
Amadeus LST Business Card (back):
Amadeus Postcard/Flyer (front):
Amadeus Postcard/Flyer (back):
Working with the directors of AMADEUS LST, we desinged and art directed this set of marketing collateral illustrations and helped "stream-line" their message from just a taxi cab service to: "L.S.T." - LIMOUSINE | SHUTTLE | TAXI.

As AMADEUS moves from just a taxi cab service and expands beyond servicing just the city of Oxnard, REPUBLIC was called upon to help re-shape the message to include their county wide reach and their newly added LIMOUSINE & SHUTTLE services.

To play off of, and expand upon their brand name recognition, each element of the AMADEUS title and identity was re-constructed along with the inclusion of their core competencies and added services.

With just a couple additions and revisions left to do, these pieces will soon be ready for production.
